BEYOND THE STATS

  • Known by the LAPD as a crime magnet and one of the worst buildings on Skid Row, The Ford Hotel has been transformed into housing for formerly homeless suffering from mental illness. The existing 295 units, with common bathrooms and showers, were completely gutted to form half as many light housekeeping units with kitchenettes and full bathrooms.
  • Built in 1925, the original board formed concrete structure required the reinforcing of all of its interior columns along with new shear walls and steel stud interior framing. The roof was removed over part of the building to create an open-air courtyard, surrounded with units and common areas including a community room, laundry room and lounge areas.
