Located on a small lot in downtown Santa Monica, Step Up on Colorado provides permanent supportive housing for homeless individuals with mental illness. The facility includes two community rooms with kitchens, a resident’s computer lounge and library, and support offices.
The project was designed around the concept of a Healing Tree. A large sycamore tree welcomes residents entering the building, and provides a focus for a semi-circle of organically curving balconies carved out of the front of the building. The balconies, graced with evocative filtered light from the tree, provide highly social gathering areas for the residents, and connect to the project’s other common spaces. The community room at the second floor also opens on to the more protected and private courtyard on the west side of the building. Exterior materials include ipe siding and fiber cement board panels.
