|Westerly School of Long Beach
Established in 1997, Westerly School is a small private school for grades K through 8 currently housed in portable buildings in an industrial area of Long Beach. The new Arts Building and Westerly Pavilion are the first permanent school facilities on the campus.
The new master plan builds upon the existing double quadrangle plan. New parking lots to the north and southwest increase capacity and provide safer drop-off / pick-up for the students. In anticipation of campus growth, an infrastructure “spine” was located to provide electricity and water to the new and future buildings.
Located away from the other campus buildings and comprised of two wings for performance and visual arts, the one-story building defines a garden for exhibition and performance and serves as an extension of the interior teaching spaces. An existing amphitheater anchors the building to the site. Simple and economical materials respond to the modest budget.
The large, flexible performance and gymnasium space forms the centerpiece of the plan with lower offices and support spaces to the west and lockers and a classroom to the south. A covered arcade along the offices creates a protected walkway from the street and a prominent facade for the school entry.

Long Beach Flea Market
Part of being a real Angeleno is committing to memory which of the big flea markets fall on which Sunday. The Long Beach Flea Market is super friendly, has great deals, and is big, but not too big. It is on the third Sunday of every month.
