There are many of moments of satisfaction in an architectural practice, from being awarded a project, having the client approve the design, attending the groundbreaking, watching the construction proceed, attending the opening party, and seeing it enjoyed by its users. But the real joy comes when you are surrounded by crumpled up sketches of bad ideas and then suddenly discover what the project wants to be.

WADE KILLEFER, FAIA

FOUNDER & PARTNER EMERITUS

Wade started what is now KFA Architecture in 1975. He was born in San Francisco, grew up in Washington, D.C. and received his B.A. in English from Stanford. After a year as a union carpenter, he attended UCLA’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning, where he met Barbara Flammang FAIA, his business partner and wife. In 2006, he was elected to the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architects and in 2016 the firm was named Firm of the Year by the California AIA. He is the past president of the AIALA.
