As we celebrate KFA’s 50th Anniversary, we’re honored to partner with AIA|LA for a walking tour showcasing our firm’s long-standing impact on LA’s built environment through adaptive reuse.
Led by KFA Senior Associates Tarrah Beebe, AIA and Karen Filippe, AIA, this 2-hour, 1+ mile walking tour will explore the transformation of historic buildings into vibrant housing, hospitality, and commercial spaces in DTLA.

We’re pleased to see The Shay Hotel featured in e-architect!
Located at Ivy Station in Culver City, The Shay is a 148-key boutique hotel designed for modern travelers, featuring loft-inspired guest rooms, a dynamic lobby bar, indoor fire pit, and game room, and flexible event spaces, including an 8,000 SF meeting area and a 5,000 SF outdoor courtyard.
The article explores how The Shay serves as a vibrant social hub, offering a seamless blend of hospitality, work, and leisure in the heart of Culver City.
Designed by KFA Architecture, with interiors by Studio Collective for Lowe, and operated by Hyatt, The Shay is a key addition to the Ivy Station district.

Originally from Cincinnati, Michael earned his Bachelor of Architecture from USC before spending time in Nicaragua, where he worked with the city planning office in Matagalpa to design public spaces. Since then, he has contributed to community-focused design organizations in Dallas and Los Angeles, shaping projects that support inclusive and resilient neighborhoods.
Michael is dedicated to creating thoughtful, elegant, and practical design solutions that enhance the built environment. Outside of work, he enjoys exploring architecture’s relationship with public space, topography, and community development—along with a good farmhouse ale and a bowl of Skyline Chili.

We’re pleased to welcome Humberto Herrero, Assoc. AIA to KFA! 🎉
Humberto brings a strong background in forensic investigations, waterproofing, and building envelope systems, applying his expertise across residential, commercial, educational, and institutional projects. He earned his Master of Architecture and Urban Design from UCLA, where he explored materials, construction techniques, and urban environments.
Outside of architecture, Humberto enjoys cooking, playing softball, skateboarding, and drumming. He also practices blacksmithing, a craft that connects to his last name, Herrero—Spanish for blacksmith. 🔥
