Los Angeles, CA South Los Angeles
- Client : Retirement Housing Foundation
- Cost : $15M
- Size : 110,000 SF / 59 units
- Completion Date : 2016
BEYOND THE STATS
- Located at 50th and Main Streets, Paloma Terrace provides much-needed affordable family housing in Central Los Angeles.
- The main organizing element for the building is a large central courtyard that includes an oval-shaped green space with a large specimen tree, as well as a large playground/BBQ area. The courtyard is surrounded by all the building’s communal spaces including children’s activity rooms, teen center, computer lab, library, large community room, and laundry facilities near the play areas. The site also includes a half basketball court and landscaped picnic areas.
- Taking up an entire city block, the massing of the building is broken down into a series of vertical elements which step out of plane with one another, and exterior materials include horizontal wood siding, dark red Trespa panels and stucco. A large break in the façade allows views into the central courtyard, connecting the building to pedestrians and the community.

Hawkins Park
An inspired open space, Augustus F. Hawkins Nature Park is home to native plant ecosystems. It is well designed, well cared for, and well used by a community that is lacking in open spaces.
