BEYOND THE STATS
- Located on a small lot in downtown Santa Monica, one block north of the Exposition train station, Step Up on Colorado provides transitional supportive housing for homeless individuals with mental illness.
- The facility provides the residents with two community rooms with kitchens, a resident’s computer lounge and library, and support offices.
- Inspired by a beautiful site tree, the project was designed around the concept of a Healing Tree. A semi-circle of organically curving balconies was carved out of the front of the building embracing the canopy of the tree, and providing evocative filtered light. The balconies are tied to the common spaces and provide social gathering areas for the residents. The Community room at the second floor also spills out into the more protected and private central courtyard. The residents of the facility have varied and changing social needs, and by providing these communal social spaces in addition to the private rooms creates a balance.
