West LA VA Community Plan

Los Angeles, CA

  • Client : Century Housing, Thomas Safran and Associates, US Vets
  • Size : 700 acres / 1200 units

BEYOND THE STATS

  • After many years of inaction, the US Department of Veteran Affairs has selected a development team to move forward with the development of 1,200 units of permanent supportive housing for veterans on the North campus of the West LA VA Campus.
  • KFA collaborated on the development of the new master plan for the North Campus, and is transforming four historic hospital buildings into housing. The master plan imbues the site with
sense of order and purpose; numerous historic nodes are knit together into one cohesive axial design.
  • The master plan is organized around two villages; the quiet and introspective North Village is orthogonal, with large open spaces, quads, promenades, pedestrian street and walks. Most of the buildings at the North Village are historic renovations.
  • The South Village has centralized service spaces, a retail feel at the Town Center, campus-wide gathering areas, and higher density 4 and 5-story new residential buildings.
